The Co-Founder’s take on Mi MIX 2S

Xiaomi Inc. on March 27th, 2018, announced MI MIX 2S which is the latest offering by Xiaomi in MI flagship series smartphones. At the launch event in Shanghai, China the company’s co-founder Lei Jun exclaimed that “We are comparing to iPhone X because it’s the best phone. We just want to show we surpassed the best in many features.”

A take on the aesthetics of Mi MIX 2S

Xiaomi’s Mi MIX 2S is an absolute beauty to hold. The design aesthetics of the device have not changed much from its predecessors MI MIX 2 since its MI MIX 2S, not MI MIX 3; it’s kind of revised model of the MI MIX 2 but there have been some much-needed improvements.

Xiaomi MI MIX 2S is built from series 7000 aluminum which is doped in Ceramic to continue the heritage of ceramic from generation one MI MIX.

The Front: Mi MIX 2S

From front Xiaomi MI MIX 2S is an eye catcher, due to its whopping 5.99-inch, 2160 x 1080 that’s 1080p flocks, 18:9 display in relatively small form factor. It still sports an LCD panel, no OLED probably to keep the price at bay. But still, the display is vibrant and bright. There is 18K gold around the camera and fingerprint sensor to give it more premium look. Color option for the phone is still limited to white and black. At bottom, you will notice an incredible bezel which sports a 5 MP front cam that definitely looks up to your nose until you held the device upside down.

From behind Xiaomi MI MIX 2S has a much-needed improved camera from the last generation. Though its design and placement are similar to iPhone X, which could have been avoided but who are we to say. The rear camera is of dual setup which replaced the single module setup from last gen MI MIX 2, meaning you will definitely get that bokeh effect to your shots and many other eye warming features that you may or may not use.

The camera setup combines two 12 MP snappers, one has f/1.8 wide angle lens and other has f/2.4 telephoto lens. Sony’s IMX363 sensor is being incorporated in the system which features bigger pixels at 1.4 µm. Also, 4 – axis OIS and dual pixel technology are made available in the setup. Plus, you will also see some software enhancement like AI effects to your final shots in bokeh mode and dynamic bokeh effect, which will keep on improving via OTA updates. Both software and hardware part of the camera setup is promising and is very per to level of iPhone X and Google Pixel 2 both of which have excellent camera setups. The one jaw-dropping fact about MI MIX 2S is its DxOMark rating which is 101, higher than both Google pixel 2 and iPhone X, so it’s safe to say you won’t be needing DSLR if you have MI MIX 2S.

The Processor Updates

Under the hood, Xiaomi MI MIX 2S sports the latest and greatest SOC available from Qualcomm which is SnapDragon 845, an 8-core chip clocked at 2.8 GHz with Adreno 630 for graphics paired with 6 GB or 8 GB RAM. Battery capacity is same as of MI MIX 2 at 3400 mAh, which according to Xiaomi can last for 1 and a half day, well we should ask them on what kind of usage do you guys test your phones! There are plenty of storage option available ranging from 64, 128 and 256 GB depending upon the RAM configuration. The phone doesn’t have expandable storage as it’s a flagship series phone.

The device also hosts wireless charging which is the first in Xiaomi flagship but sadly it still lacks any water and dust resistance certification. Quickcharge V3 support is available in wired charging through its USB type C port which is also the connector for your headphones as the device doesn’t have a 3.5 mm jack, which is just really sad. Similar to Samsung’s Bixby and Apple’s SIRI, Xiaomi has also revealed its voice assistant that will help us in hand’s free operation on the device.

The bottom line

There is still no official confirmation from Xiaomi Inc. about the launch. Yet, a look at different tech websites, we can expect Mi MIX 2S to hit the Indian markets by April 2018. In China Mi MIX 2S will be available from the starting week at 3299 CNY (approx. Rs 34000).

On a concluding note, we would like to say the Mi MIX 2S looks promising and has the capability to create a buzz in the Smartphone industry, hence it’s worth the wait. Furthermore, the Xiaomi flagship 2018 is set to give a tough competition to One Plus 5T and other phones priced at 30 to 40k in India.
